Easy Digital Downloads vs WooCommerce for Selling Digital Products on WordPress (October 2026)

PLR ExpertReviews

Selling PLR packs from your own WordPress site usually means choosing between Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) and WooCommerce. This comparison uses only each company’s official pricing pages and docs as of October 2026. We haven’t tested either plugin, so confirm current details before buying.

What each one costs

Easy Digital Downloads

EDD Lite is free on WordPress.org. Four paid passes currently show introductory first-year prices; EDD says renewals are at full price:

  • Personal: $99.50 in the first year ($199 regular), 1 site
  • Extended: $199.50 in the first year ($399 regular), 1 site
  • Professional: $299.50 in the first year ($599 regular), 2 sites
  • All Access: $499.50 in the first year ($999 regular), 3 sites

Watch the fee: EDD’s Stripe docs say free-version Stripe payments carry an extra 3% application fee, which also applies to PayPal for Lite users and to renewal orders. An active Extended pass or higher (or the Stripe Pro extension) removes it; if the license lapses, the fee returns.

WooCommerce

The core plugin is free with no platform fee. WooCommerce lists extensions at $29 to $299 per year each and WooPayments card processing at roughly 2.5% to 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction.

Digital-download features

  • Download limits and expiry: Both are built in. EDD has a store-wide download limit (overridable per product) and link expiration in hours, defaulting to 24; customers get fresh links from their account page. WooCommerce sets a limit and expiry in days per product.
  • File protection: Both offer “forced” PHP delivery, an optional login requirement and a less secure redirect method for large or remote files.
  • Bundles: EDD includes bundles from the Extended pass up. WooCommerce’s Product Bundles extension is $79 for one year.
  • Licensing: EDD includes software licensing in Professional and All Access. WooCommerce’s Software Add-on for license keys is $179 for one year.

Pros and cons

EDD pros: Built for digital products, with download controls in core and bundles, licensing and content restriction grouped into passes. EDD cons: The 3% fee on the free version unless you have an active Extended pass or higher (or the Stripe Pro extension), and renewals at double the introductory price.

WooCommerce pros: Free core, no platform fee, a large extension marketplace and physical-product support. WooCommerce cons: Bundles and licensing are separate paid extensions, so costs can stack up, and its docs note the login-required download setting doesn’t cover guest purchases.

Who each suits

EDD suits download-only PLR sellers who want digital features in one package and can budget for an Extended pass to avoid the 3% fee. WooCommerce suits sellers who also ship physical goods or prefer buying extensions one by one. Either way, total a full year’s costs, including renewals, before committing.
