Lemon Squeezy for PLR Sellers: An Honest Overview

PLR ExpertReviews

Lemon Squeezy is a popular checkout and payments platform for digital products. Before PLR sellers sign up, though, there’s one rule on its own help pages that matters more than any feature or fee. This overview is based on Lemon Squeezy’s and Stripe’s official pages; we haven’t tested the platform ourselves.

What Lemon Squeezy is

Lemon Squeezy acts as a merchant of record. In plain terms, it’s the seller on each transaction, so it collects and handles global sales tax and VAT for you. It hosts your files, delivers them after purchase, and offers no-code checkout links you can embed on any website. (This is general information, not tax advice.)

Fees (as of October 2026)

  • Base fee: 5% + 50¢ per transaction, with no monthly fee.
  • Extra fees: +1.5% for transactions outside the US, +1.5% for PayPal, and +0.5% for subscription payments.
  • Payouts: free to US bank accounts; $0.50 per PayPal payout to US accounts; higher fees for non-US accounts.

Digital download features

  • Unlimited files of any type per product, including zip files, ebooks, audio and video
  • Product variants, each with its own files and pricing
  • One-time payments, subscriptions, discounts and free trials
  • Automatic license keys, free products and “pay what you want” pricing
  • Discount codes, affiliates and a customer portal

The big catch for PLR sellers

Lemon Squeezy’s prohibited products list names Private Label Rights (PLR) and Master Resell Rights (MRR) products. It also bans any product you have a license to sell but don’t hold the original IP rights to. New stores go through identity and business checks before going live, so a store built on resold PLR is likely to be turned down. If you’ve heavily reworked PLR into your own product, ask Lemon Squeezy before you build around it.

Lemon Squeezy and Stripe

Stripe bought Lemon Squeezy in 2024. In a January 2026 update, Lemon Squeezy said it’s moving toward Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe’s own merchant of record service. The goal is to give existing users an easy way to migrate, and it noted that support and product updates had slowed while this was being built. The post didn’t give dates or require anyone to move.

Stripe’s page lists Managed Payments at 3.5% per successful transaction on top of standard Stripe processing fees. It covers digital products in supported countries, including the US. You must hold all the rights and licenses needed to distribute what you sell.

Pros

  • Sales tax and VAT handled for you
  • No monthly fee
  • Solid tools for digital downloads

Cons

  • Bans PLR and MRR resale products
  • Add-on fees can raise the cost well above 5% + 50¢
  • Its future depends on Stripe’s plans

Who it suits

It’s a good fit for creators selling ebooks, templates, courses or software they own outright. If your catalog is resold PLR, look for a platform that clearly allows licensed content instead.
