Gumroad is one of the best-known places to sell digital downloads, and plenty of PLR sellers use it for products they have rebranded or built themselves. This overview covers fees, tax handling and a few terms worth reading, based on Gumroad’s own pages as of October 2026. We haven’t tested the platform ourselves, so treat this as a summary of the published details, not a hands-on review.
Fees
- No monthly charge. Gumroad’s pricing page lists $0 per month.
- Direct sales (through your profile or direct links): 10% plus $0.50 per transaction.
- Sales through the Discover marketplace: 30% per transaction.
- The pricing page doesn’t spell out payment processing or payout fees, so check the current details before you set prices.
Memberships, including courses and podcasts, are included in the same pricing.
Taxes
Since January 1, 2025, Gumroad says it acts as Merchant of Record and handles sales tax collection and remittance worldwide at no extra cost. That means creators don’t manage tax settings for sales on the platform. Income tax on your earnings is still your responsibility, and this is general information, not tax advice.
Pros and cons
- Pros: no monthly fee, a simple setup, built-in tax handling, and memberships included.
- Cons: the 10% plus $0.50 fee can add up on low-priced products, and Discover sales cost 30%.
- Cons: refunds and disputes are decided by Gumroad, and a refund rate above 15% can lead to part of your funds being held for 90 days under its terms.
Terms PLR sellers should read
Gumroad’s terms say sellers must own their products or hold all the rights they need, and must provide license terms that buyers agree to. The terms also ban fake reviews, unsubstantiated earnings claims and fake urgency or “compare-at” prices. If you sell PLR-based products, confirm your license allows resale in your format, and that Gumroad’s rules on prohibited products don’t cover your product. We looked at one related issue in our post on Gumroad Discover.
Who it suits
Gumroad fits sellers who want a quick start and no monthly bill, and who are comfortable giving up a larger share of each sale. If you sell many low-priced items, compare the numbers with other platforms first. Our Payhip vs Gumroad post walks through that comparison.
