A workbook is one of the simplest ways to add value to a digital product. It turns reading into doing. And a fillable PDF lets buyers type their answers right into the file instead of printing it, which many people prefer.
Here’s a practical workflow for creating one, whether you’re starting from scratch or adapting PLR worksheets you’re licensed to edit.
1. Design the pages first
Lay out the workbook in your usual design tool, then export it as a PDF. Keep the layout simple:
- Leave generous space for answers. Typed text needs room just like handwriting does.
- Use clear prompts above each box, such as “What’s one goal for this month?”
- Stick to one or two fonts and plenty of white space.
- Number your pages so buyers can follow along with a course or ebook.
2. Add the form fields
In Adobe Acrobat, the tool for this is called Prepare Form. Adobe explains that you open the Tools tab, choose Prepare Form and select your PDF. Acrobat analyzes the document and adds form fields where it detects them. You can then add more fields from the toolbar and adjust the layout.
Auto-detection is a great start, but check every page. Look for:
- Fields that are missing or placed over the wrong spot.
- Single-line fields where you want several lines of text. Set those to allow multiple lines.
- A sensible tab order, so pressing Tab moves to the next question.
- Checkboxes for yes/no or habit-tracker style items.
Adobe sells Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro as paid plans, so check the current plan details for the form features you need.
3. Test in more than one app
Buyers will open your file in all sorts of places: Acrobat Reader, a web browser, a phone or a tablet. Fill in the workbook yourself in at least two of them, save it, close it and reopen it to make sure the answers stay put. If something doesn’t behave, mention the recommended app in your instructions.
4. Package it for delivery
- Give the file a clear, descriptive name.
- Add a short “How to use this workbook” page at the front.
- Consider including a print-friendly version without form fields for people who prefer paper.
- Check your file size against your platform’s upload limits.
If you’re working from PLR worksheets, confirm the license lets you edit them and sell or give away the result. A fillable version is a nice upgrade, but your own prompts, examples and structure are what make it worth buying.
