PLR, MRR, RR: the abbreviations on digital product listings can look interchangeable, but they describe very different permissions. Mixing them up is one of the easiest ways to break a license without meaning to.
Below is a plain-English overview of how these terms are commonly used. Treat it as general information: every seller writes their own license, and the actual terms that come with your product are what count.
Private label rights (PLR)
PLR usually gives you the most freedom. A typical PLR license lets you edit the content, change the design, rewrite sections and put your own name and branding on the result. That is why PLR is popular with bloggers, coaches and marketers who want a head start on content they will customize.
Even generous PLR licenses often include limits, such as no passing PLR rights on to your customers, no selling below a minimum price, or no use on certain marketplaces.
Master resell rights (MRR)
With MRR, you can usually sell the product and keep the profits, but you cannot modify or rebrand it. MRR licenses commonly let you pass resell rights on to your buyers, so they can resell it too. Because many sellers may offer the identical product, MRR items tend to work better as bonuses or bundle extras than as flagship offers.
Resell rights (RR)
Resell rights generally let you sell the product to end users, but your customers do not receive the right to resell it. As with MRR, editing is normally not allowed.
Personal use rights
The most limited option. Personal use rights restrict the content to your own use, so you cannot resell, rebrand or redistribute it.
Five questions to ask before you buy
- Can I edit and rebrand it, or must it stay unchanged?
- Can I sell it, give it away, or only use it myself?
- Can my customers resell it?
- Are any platforms or uses excluded, such as Amazon KDP or print?
- Can I claim authorship, or must the original creator be credited?
A license generally gives you permission to use the content; it does not usually make you the copyright owner. If the terms are unclear, ask the seller in writing before you buy, and for anything high-stakes, talk to a qualified professional.
