Etsy Digital Listing Rules: File Limits, Types and Packaging Tips for PLR Sellers (October 2026)

PLR ExpertMarketing & Traffic

If you sell digital downloads on Etsy, the file rules shape how you package a product. Etsy’s Help Center sets clear limits, and a PLR-based bundle can run into them fast. Here is what the rules say (as of October 2026) and how to work within them.

What Etsy allows on an instant download listing

  • Up to five files per listing.
  • A maximum of 20MB per file.
  • Files must be uploaded when you create the listing, and you can’t publish an instant download listing without at least one file attached.
  • Allowed file types: .bmp, .doc, .gif, .jpeg, .jpg, .mobi, .mov, .mp3, .mpeg, .pdf, .png, .psp, .rtf, .stl, .txt, .zip, .ePUB and .iBook.
  • File names can use up to 70 letters, numbers, periods, underscores or hyphens. Buyers see the exact names, and you can’t edit a name after upload.

Etsy also says you can’t offer variations on digital items, so each version of a product (say, a Letter-size and an A4 planner) needs its own listing or its own file inside the same download.

Packaging tips that follow from the limits

Name files before you upload. Because names are permanent, use a clear pattern such as “01-start-here.pdf” so buyers know what to open first. We cover a simple naming system in our post on file names and folders for digital product downloads.

Use a ZIP for larger bundles. Five files at 20MB each is a hard ceiling. A ZIP lets you group several files in one slot, though the ZIP itself must still be 20MB or less. Etsy’s article doesn’t describe any option for larger files, so shrink images and PDFs first.

Put a “Start Here” PDF first. One short file with your license terms, a link to any bonus material you host elsewhere and your support contact saves repeat questions. If you sell products built from PLR, check your license before you include any links or bonus content, and state what buyers may and may not do with the files.

Made-to-order downloads

If you personalize files for each buyer, Etsy offers a made-to-order option. You choose “Made To Order” when you create the listing, then upload up to five files (20MB each) from Shop Manager > Orders after you complete the order. The buyer gets an email when the files are ready.

Two details worth remembering

Etsy says digital items must be made and/or designed by you. If your product starts from PLR, make sure you have changed it enough, and that your license allows resale in this form, before you list it. Also, the only way to revoke a buyer’s access after purchase is to cancel the order, so test your files before you publish.

Rules change, so confirm the current limits in the Etsy Help Center before you upload.
