How to Vet a PLR Package Before You Buy: A 10-Point Quality Check

PLR ExpertPLR Tips

A PLR package can save you days of work, or cost you days of cleanup. The difference usually shows up within the first ten minutes of looking at it, if you know what to check.

Run through this quick quality check before you buy (using the sales page and any samples) or right after you download, while a refund is still possible.

The 10-point check

  1. Read the license first. Make sure it covers what you plan to do: edit, put your name on it, sell it, give it away or use it on your blog. If the license is vague or missing, treat that as a warning sign.
  2. Ask for a sample. A full sample article or chapter tells you far more than a product description.
  3. Check the writing. Look for typos, clumsy phrasing and repetition. Fixing a few is normal; rewriting every paragraph defeats the purpose.
  4. Look for real substance. Does it give specific steps and examples, or does it circle vague advice? Thin content is hard to rescue.
  5. Check the dates. Outdated screenshots, discontinued tools and old statistics all need replacing. Factor that time into the price.
  6. Watch for risky claims. Remove anything promising income, cures or guaranteed results. The FTC says advertisers need evidence to back up their claims, and once you publish PLR, those claims become yours.
  7. Check the testimonials. Never reuse testimonials or reviews that came with a package. The FTC says endorsements must reflect the honest experience of the person giving them.
  8. Confirm the files are editable. You want source files (DOCX, Google Docs, Canva links or similar), not just a locked PDF.
  9. Check the images and fonts. Make sure the graphics and fonts are licensed for your use too, not only the text.
  10. Search a few sentences. Paste a couple of lines into a search engine. If the exact text appears on many sites, plan a thorough rewrite before publishing. Google’s spam policies warn against republishing content without adding value.

How to use the results

Count how many points raise a concern. One or two are normal and easy to fix. If you hit five or more, the package will probably take as long to repair as it would to write something from scratch, so it isn’t really a bargain at any price.

Keep a copy of the license and your receipt with the files. If you ever need to show what you were allowed to do with the content, you’ll have it ready.

Licensing terms vary from seller to seller, so always go by the actual license that came with your purchase. If you have legal questions about a specific use, ask a qualified professional.
