If you sell printable planners, trackers or worksheets to American buyers, page size matters more than most creators expect. A file designed for one paper size can print with cut-off edges or odd gaps on another, and that leads to confused buyers and refund requests.
The two sizes you need to know
US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches (215.9 × 279.4 mm). It is the main paper size in the United States, Canada and the Philippines, plus parts of Latin America. A4 is 210 × 297 mm (about 8.27 × 11.7 inches) and is the standard in most other countries under ISO 216. A4 is slightly narrower and taller than Letter.
Design for Letter first if your buyers are American
Since your readers are mostly in the United States, make US Letter your main version. Keep text and important graphics well inside the edges so a home printer’s margins don’t cut anything off. Home printers often can’t print right to the paper’s edge, so avoid borders or backgrounds that depend on a full-bleed result unless you tell buyers how to print them.
What happens when buyers print the wrong size
Printing an A4 file on Letter paper leaves extra white space on the left and right. Printing a Letter file on A4 leaves extra space at the top and bottom. Most printers default to true-size printing, which can crop a design, so buyers should choose “fit to page” in the print menu and check the preview first.
How to package both sizes
- Create the Letter version first, then resize a copy to A4 and check every page, rather than trusting automatic scaling.
- Name the files clearly, such as “weekly-planner-letter.pdf” and “weekly-planner-a4.pdf”.
- Put both in one download, in separate folders if you have many pages.
- Add a short “How to print” page: use Letter or A4, choose “fit to page” or “actual size,” and preview before printing.
Test before you sell
Print one page of each version at home, ideally on two different printers. Check that the margins, fonts and lines look right. If you use a PLR printable as your base, confirm the license allows resizing and editing before you change the file.
