Etsy Ads for Digital Downloads: Costs, Settings and When They Pay Off (October 2026)

PLR ExpertMarketing & Traffic

Etsy Ads can put your digital downloads in front of more shoppers, but every click costs money. When your planner or printable sells for a few dollars, that math gets tight fast.

This guide explains how Etsy’s two ad programs work, how billing and budgets are set, and how to decide whether ads make sense for products built from PLR. All figures come from Etsy’s Help Center and Seller Handbook as of October 2026.

Two Different Programs: Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads

Etsy runs two separate advertising programs, and they work very differently.

  • Etsy Ads promote your listings on Etsy itself. You choose whether to run them, set a daily budget and pay per click.
  • Offsite Ads promote your listings on outside sites such as Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Bing. Etsy runs them, and you pay a fee only when an ad click leads to a sale.

How Etsy Ads Work

Etsy Ads can show your listings in Etsy search, category pages, market pages and similar-listing sections on the website and app. They look like normal results but carry an “Ad” badge or “Ad by” label.

Etsy decides placement based on the shopper’s search, your title, tags and attributes, and how likely the listing is to sell.

Ads only show to shoppers in countries you ship to. For digital items, that means your shipping profile settings still matter.

New shops must wait 15 days after opening before starting a campaign.

How you’re billed

Etsy Ads use a cost-per-click model. Views are free; you’re charged when a shopper clicks the ad to reach your listing.

The cost per click varies by listing and placement. Etsy totals each day’s clicks and adds them to your Payment account the next day.

Budget settings

  • The minimum daily budget is $1.
  • All sellers start with a maximum daily budget of $25. Etsy recalculates that limit weekly based on your last seven days of ad spend, and it can rise if you regularly use your full budget.
  • Etsy says you won’t spend more than your daily budget. Once it’s used up, your ads stop showing for the day.

You can change your budget from Etsy Ads, then Settings, then Manage your budget.

If your budget is $25 or more, you can pick a strategy per listing: greater visibility, efficient spending or lower click cost. Below $25, every listing uses efficient spending. Etsy suggests running a strategy for at least 30 days before judging it.

Turning ads on or off for specific listings

You don’t have to advertise your whole shop. In Etsy Ads, open Manage advertised listings and use the on/off toggle for each listing. You can also select several listings and switch them all at once.

To stop everything, go to Etsy Ads and choose Pause your ads, then Turn off ads.

How Offsite Ads Work

Every seller is enrolled in Offsite Ads automatically. You’re charged only when a shopper clicks an offsite ad and then buys from your shop within 30 days.

  • 15% fee if your shop has never made $10,000 USD or more in any consecutive 365-day period.
  • 12% fee if your shop has reached $10,000 USD in a 365-day period.
  • $100 USD cap on the fee for any single order.

One click can lead to more than one attributed order, and each can carry a fee. If the buyer’s last click before buying was an Etsy Ad, only the Etsy Ads charge applies.

Opt-out rules

You can opt out only if your shop has never hit $10,000 USD in sales in a 365-day period. Etsy checks sales monthly. Once you reach that mark, Offsite Ads become mandatory for the life of the shop.

To opt out, go to Shop Manager, then Settings, then Offsite Ads, and choose to opt out. You can turn it back on from the same page later.

When Ads Make Sense for PLR-Based Downloads

Digital products built from PLR usually sell at low prices, which leaves little room for ad costs. A few practical points:

Fix the listing before you pay for traffic

Etsy itself says ads can’t fix a listing that buyers don’t want. With PLR, other sellers may offer similar content, so your rebranding, cover and preview images need to stand out before you pay for clicks.

Start small and selective

Turn ads on only for your best converting listings, not your entire catalog. A $1 to $5 daily budget is enough to gather data without big risk.

Bundles and higher-priced items often give you more room per sale than a single $3 printable. That’s a judgment call based on your own numbers, not a rule.

Think about Offsite Ads separately

On a low-priced download, a 15% fee on an attributed sale is a real cut on top of Etsy’s other fees. Some small shops keep it on because there’s no upfront cost; others opt out to protect margins. If you’re still under the threshold, it’s your choice.

Tracking Results With Etsy Stats

The Etsy Ads dashboard shows these metrics:

  • Ad views: how often your listing appeared as an ad (free).
  • Ad clicks and click rate: how many views led to a click.
  • Orders and revenue from ads: purchases of any item in your shop within 30 days of an ad click.
  • Budget spent and ROAS, which compares ad-attributed revenue with ad cost.

In Manage advertised listings, each listing shows its own stats and spend, plus a Search terms view. Use it to spot searches that don’t match your product.

Etsy Stats also lists Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads as traffic sources, though app clicks on Etsy Ads are counted under “Etsy app & other Etsy pages.”

Before deciding, compare revenue from ads with what you actually keep after Etsy’s fees and ad spend. ROAS alone doesn’t show profit.

The Bottom Line

For PLR-based downloads, run ads only on listings that already sell, start with a small budget and judge results after a month.
