Gumroad Discover: How It Works, What It Costs and Why PLR Resale Is Off-Limits

PLR ExpertMarketing & Traffic

Gumroad Discover is the marketplace side of Gumroad. It can show your products to shoppers who have never heard of you, which makes it tempting for anyone selling digital downloads. Before you list anything, though, it pays to know how Discover works, what it costs and what Gumroad won’t allow at all.

First: Gumroad does not allow PLR resale

This is the part PLR buyers most need to hear. Gumroad’s help center states that, in general, you can’t resell products you didn’t create. Its list of prohibited items specifically names reselling ebooks you hold PLR or MRR rights to, and its prohibited-products page (revised September 16, 2026) includes reselling private label rights products.

Gumroad says a first violation gets the product removed, and a second can lead to the account being closed after notice. So a PLR pack sold as-is, or lightly rebranded, doesn’t belong on Gumroad. If you’re unsure whether a product you built yourself, using PLR only as raw material, would be acceptable, Gumroad suggests asking its support team before you list it.

How Discover works

According to Gumroad, Discover recommends your products to potential customers beyond your existing audience. It’s switched on by default for every product. You turn it off for a product by removing that product’s category on its Share tab.

Products on Discover are also opted into the Gumroad Affiliates program. Those affiliates earn a fixed 10% commission with a 7-day cookie. You can opt out from your affiliates dashboard, and the opt-out applies to all your products.

Who qualifies

Your account has to meet three conditions:

  • Payout settings are filled in.
  • You have at least $100 in balance from genuine sales. Self-purchases or sales to friends and family don’t count.
  • Gumroad’s risk team has reviewed your account. Gumroad says this takes about three weeks on average after you pass the $100 mark.

Each product then needs at least one successful (non-refunded) sale, a category and ratings turned on. If you hide ratings, the product drops out of Discover search.

Category and tags

You set both on the product’s Share tab, in the Gumroad Discover section. Gumroad advises thinking about how buyers would search and using descriptive, specific tags. It doesn’t publish how Discover ranks products, so be wary of anyone who claims to know the formula.

What Discover sales cost

Gumroad’s fees page lists 10% plus $0.50 per sale for direct sales through your profile or links, with card or PayPal processing charged on top. Sales that come through Discover carry a flat 30% fee, which Gumroad says includes processing. There are no monthly fees, and Gumroad acts as merchant of record for sales tax.

Is it worth it?

For products you created yourself, Discover can bring in buyers you wouldn’t otherwise reach. The trade-off is a much bigger cut on those sales. Price with that 30% in mind, keep driving your own traffic to direct links, and keep PLR resale products on a platform whose rules allow them.
